He cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says.” 39 (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive.
I can picture Jesus saying this on a dry and dusty day in Israel when the people would really enjoy a spring of cool water. Days in our lives can be dry of friends, dry of health, dry of money, and sometimes just dry of life.
When Jesus speaks He speaks spiritually. So our thirst is not a a thirst of a parched throat but a parched heart of hearts, the depth of us and I would say permeates every part of our soul. Which is beneficial, this thirst that permeates, because the Living Water, the Holy Spirit can fill and permeate the depths of our souls, all the thirsty places.
The wonderful occurrence when He fills us with His Spirit is that He is poured out so generously that our thirst is abundantly quenched and He overflows or brims over to anyone around us.
All we have to do is ask for the Holy Spirit or tell Jesus we are parched and dry of soul. He will pour in the One our soul needs.
