Jesus told them, “Go back and tell John what’s going on: 5 The blind see, The lame walk, Lepers are cleansed, The deaf hear, The dead are raised, The wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side. 6 “Is this what you were expecting? Then count yourselves most blessed! Matthew 11:4-6
I…love…Jesus. John is in a dark, damp, filthy prison, discouraged, his normally powerful faith waning. So John sends his disciples to the One with wisdom, with the Holy Spirit like a dove, whose shoes John was not worthy to unlace. And he wants to be sure Jesus is the One, maybe he had interpreted it all wrong. His disciples go to Jesus. Jesus tells them the physical miracles He is doing. Then He tells them God is on the side of those who struggle. The miracles were signs. Not just of Jesus’ authority but they were signs that the people were loved by Him. He healed a deaf ear not just for display but for love for the little deaf man. John was one who understood this. Not many did. But when John heard the words of Jesus there was no question that He was the One not because of the signs and wonders but because of the love.
