King Ahasueras announced that he was wanting a new Queen. So some girls came rushing to the palace for the privilege while others like sweet Esther wanted to be at home but they came and took her. She immediately went to Hegai the Eunich in charge and said Hegai, sir, I don’t desire to be the queen and I prefer to be free to go. Hegai laughed a deep, affectionate laugh. Miss Esther you are exactly the kind of young lady the king would fall in love with. You are beautiful and yet not proud. You have a gentle personality but aren’t afraid to speak your peace with respect. No my bets are on you. I can’t let you go. But I will make your stay here as pleasant as possible. Tell me what you want and it’s yours. Esther said if I have to stay I will do as you tell me. You know the preferences of the king so tell me what they are and I’ll follow your instruction.
Esther was orphaned years ago and her older cousin Mordecai took her in. He had always been so wise that Esther had no trouble following details from men who were strong but had other’s good in mind. So she did all Hegai told her for a year.
Then the night came for her to go in. She was giggly nervous. But she had to settle down to appear dignified before the King. So she said Hegai, what do I wear? And Hegai gave her a pale peach gauze dress that highlighted her olive skin and brown eyes. He said nothing gaudy for the King. He’s not into gaudy. You are beautiful, Miss Esther. You will win him at hello!
She went in and his heart opened before she said a word. They began talking telling stories passed down to them as they grew up.Esther told the story Jacob and Rachel. Ahasueras told of Kings before him. She stayed the night and became the new Queen. She loved him. He was strong in personality yet boyish also. He always treated her gently. He was only firm if needed. As for him falling in love with her, she had him at hello and his love only grew from there.
Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her as his daughter, came to go in to the king, she did not request anything except what Hegai, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the women, advised. And Esther found favor in the eyes of all who saw her. (Esther 2:15 NASB)
