What’s Your Name

imageThen He said, Let Me go, for day is breaking. But [Jacob] said, I will not let You go unless You declare a blessing upon me. [The Man] asked him, What is your name? And [in shock of realization, whispering] he said, Jacob [supplanter, schemer, trickster, swindler]! And He said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God]; for you have contended and have power with God and with men and have prevailed. (Genesis 32:26-28 AMP)

God’s blessing, His moving in his life, his daily presence mattered to Jacob. God said it’s too late tonight to bless you. Jacob said Lord, I’m not going anywhere. I’m no good without Your blessing.

That’s when God asked Jacob his name. His name is not what mattered. It served to recollect him of his past. He was unworthy of God’s blessing. But God, in love and mercy gave Him a new name of honor. God gave Jacob the blessing he was unworthy of but so longed for.

Lord, I want your blessing. Actually i have it. It’s a Him … Your Holy Spirit. In my heart is Your Love, Your mercy. Your wisdom. I’m unworthy of Your Holy Spirit. There’s too often sin in my heart. But I’m grateful You came in to me.
